Candlish Celebrates Cycle Success
Portsmouth Liberal Democrats are celebrating a successful bid to the government's Active Travel Fund, spearheaded by Cllr Peter Candlish, which aims to make walking and cycling across the city safer, more convenient, and more enjoyable. The city will benefit from £123,562 which will be used by Portsmouth City Council to deliver improvements to help you embrace healthier and more sustainable travel options.
If approved, the Council will use the funding to improve a crossing on London Road in North End, to make it easier and safer for people walking to navigate the busy district centre. This will build on the success of previous improvements, which delivered significant upgrades such as the new toucan crossing on Victoria Road North and the improved shared cycling and walking path outside Somerstown Hub. Together, these projects are helping to create a safer and more connected network of walking and cycling routes across our city.
This funding allows us to build on the progress we’ve already made in improving walking and cycling across Portsmouth. Safer crossings, better routes, and School Streets are just some of the ways we’re making active travel the easy, accessible choice for everyone. These changes will create a healthier, better-connected city and support a cleaner, greener future for all.
Cllr Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport
By making it easier to travel actively these upgrades aim to transform Portsmouth into a cleaner, greener, and better-connected city. Portsmouth Lib Dems and the city's Lib Dem-led Council are committed to supporting active travel as part of our vision for a healther, more sustainable future.
Cllr Peter Candlish and the council’s transport service is now working to develop detailed plans for the proposed scheme.
