Daisy Cooper, Deputy leader of the Liberal Democrat Party, visited Portsmouth recently to back our campaign to demand better GP provision for the city.
Portsmouth has the second worst ratio in the country – just 1 GP to every 2843 patients. Portsmouth Lib Dems have been campaigning about this GP Crisis all year.
Daisy’s visit included discussing the matter with GPs directly at the Osbourne Rd practice of the Trafalgar Medical Group to hear about pressures that Portsmouth GPs and patients face. With Daisy's backing, we can take this issue straight to Parliament.
The local Lib Dem team will continue to fight for more and better access to GP's.
Our practical plan to achieve this includes:
- Allowing pharmacist to prescribe simple prescriptions
- Letting the council employ GPs directly in areas of high need
- Long term, building a local medical school to train our own GPs
- We also want more modern GP practices in more convenient locations.
These are included in the Lib Dem-led Council’s ambitious plans that lie behind the compulsory purchase of the Debenhams in Palmerston Rd and are part of the proposals for the new Bransbury park community and leisure centre scheme.
