Improving Bus Travel for Portsmouth

Portsmouth’s Lib Dem-led council is pushing forward with its visionary plan to improve bus services in the city – making bus travel more convenient and improving our environment.

Following our record of working with local residents to shape council services, Cabinet Member for Transport Cllr Peter Candlish is spearheading the council’s consultation period to get your views on improving bus stops.

Following Portsmouth’s 2024 bus stop accessibility survey, where people were asked what changes they’d like to see to make bus stops for accessible for everyone, the council’s transport team have come up with a range of proposals including making changes that will speed up journey times and help buses to get out of stops easily, as well as changes to pathways and stops to make bus stops easier for people to get on and off with a pram or in a wheelchair.

Portsmouth is already leading the way with sustainable travel, with a 20% rise in bus passengers last year – and over 12 million bus journeys taken. Our return to bus travel from recognised at last year’s UK Bus Awards as the city took gold in the Partnership for Excellence category.

Encouraging more people to choose the bus not only reduces congestion but also contributes to better air quality and creating a healthier environment for all of us. Portsmouth’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) is one of a range of initiatives your Lib Dem-run council has championed including fare free days, 24-hour bus routes, and more frequent buses.

Making bus travel accessible for everyone is a key part of our efforts to improve transport in our city. At a time when the Labour government are taxing jobs and slashing support to the most vulnerable, I’m proud that your Lib Dem council is continuing to invest in Portsmouth working towards our shared vision of a city that works for everyone. It’s part of our plan to keep Portsmouth moving forward.

Cllr Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport
