The Fight to Save Portsmouth's Public Services
The Labour Government is trying to take away Portsmouth's financially strong council and distinct identity. The city urgently needs your help.
Nobody in Portsmouth elected Labour MPs expecting them to force our city into a new, insolvent mega council. We have to stop this.
Labour want this new mega council to have half a million people and it would include lots of areas where their council is going bust, like Conservative-run Hampshire.
Portsmouth would even have to pick up the debts of these other areas as our city has sound finances.
The mega council would be bankrupt on day one and Portsmouth would be stuck with the tab.
That means Labour ministers want to force service cuts and higher taxes on Portsmouth to pay for other areas.
This would be a disaster for much-loved services like libraries and community wardens.
After cuts to Winter Fuel Allowances and tax rises on GPs, care homes and hospices, Labour are now coming for our city services.
They are rushing this through in the hope that nobody will stop them. They have even demanded proposals this month.
If our council submits no proposals, Labour ministers will only speak to other areas like Southampton and Winchester to redraw Portsmouth.
This is a disgrace.
The Government's plans would be a disaster for Portsmouth. We need our Labour MPs to put their party aside and stand up for Portsmouth.
