Charlie Murphy: Government Must Suspend Arms Sales to Israel
News is still emerging of brave British aid workers in Gaza having been killed by an Israeli strike.
British-made weapons could have been used in strikes like this one, which has tragically cost aid workers their lives.
This is completely unacceptable
We know that the brutality of the conflict in Gaza has been getting out of control.
That makes this news no less shocking. On this occasion, the best of human nature has met the worst of it.
Increasingly I have come to feel very uneasy about the prospect of British weapons being used. The time has come to send a stern message to the Israeli government on this.
The Government must end British arms sales to Israel with immediate effect.
The Liberal Democrats have had a strong line on this conflict from day one, led by our Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Layla Moran, the first MP of Palestinian descent.
The only long-term solution is one which permits two states to live at peace with each other.
We must send a strong message to the Israeli government that we will not stand by in support of this conflict any longer while these tragedies persist.
The UK must redouble its efforts for an immediate bilateral ceasefire now.
This ceasefire must last for an extended period which opens up the border and makes it safe for aid to get in, both for aid workers and those in need of the aid themselves.
I hope the Conservative Government will see sense and stop arms sales to Israel, and that the Israeli government will listen to growing international pressure.
