Stop Sewage Dumping in Southsea
Sewage dumping is worse than ever on the Conservatives' watch, enough is enough
It's official. Filthy water companies like Southern Water have dumped sewage for more than 4 million hours in just a year.
2023 was the worst year on record for sewage dumping, doubling the 2022 record. Unbelievably, 2024 could be worse still.
After local MPs, including Labour MP Stephen Morgan and Conservative MP Penny Mordaunt voted to make it easier to dump sewage in our seas, rivers and streams, your local Lib Dem team have been fighting back.
Portsmouth swimmers, surfers and other beach and sea users have made it clear that isn’t good enough. The scandal of sewage being poured into our seas is getting much worse than we dared imagine, with no effective action being taken by the government.
“The Conservative Government has the power to take action, now. It just chooses not to.” explains Lib Dem Council Leader Steve Pitt.
Water companies like Southern Water are making £2.2 billion in profits while asking taxpayers to pick up the bill. It's time for a windfall tax on these companies and a complete ban on executive bonuses. They should be run in the public interest.
Charlie Murphy, Portsmouth campaigner
The Conservatives have voted to allow the sewage dumping for another 15 years. This Conservative Government let the water companies mark their own homework while they get away with devastating our local environment. Water companies are even responsible for reporting their own sewage discharges!
“This problem will take time to fix and we need to start right now. The Conservatives are letting everybody down with their inaction.” explains Peter Candlish, Councillor for Eastney and Craneswater and local sewage campaigner.
