Scrap the Cap!
Give parents in Portsmouth the help they need to keep food on the table
The two child cap cuts off means tested help for parents with the cost of keeping food on the table for their kids. With schools having to send children home with 'packed dinner', it is time to scrap the cap and give parents in Portsmouth the help they need to keep food on the table.
Since 2017, the Conservative Government has cut off support for families with more than two children.
Data provided by the End Child Poverty Coalition shows that removing the cap would lift 250,000 children across the UK out of poverty.
In Portsmouth, 14,621 children live in poverty, more than a third of the children in our city.
12% of all children in our city are impacted by the Tories' two child cap.
The fact is that for many parents, when raising a child in 2024 there's just not enough left at the end of the month. A single parent working for an average income will face a shortfall of 13% on the cost it takes to raise a child, and an out-of-work family will have less than half of what they need. Inevitably, this pushes children into poverty when they deserve the best start in life.
This bodged cap on support for children has left working families high and dry with the spiraling cost of living.
Recent poverty figures have to be a wake up call. For too many parents in Portsmouth it is impossible to put enough food on the table. The cap has failed and it must go. It's time to scrap the cap.
Charlie Murphy, Parliamentary Candidate for Portsmouth South
Neither the city's Labour or Conservative MPs are calling for the two child cap to be scrapped. It's really important to parents across the city, as for many it's the difference between their children getting what they need and going to bed hungry.
Join our call to scrap the cap and give Portsmouth parents the help they need in the cost of living.
